Cute candyroot

Volunteer Diane LaRue sent me this photo of this tiny plant that she identified as (Polygala nana), commonly called candyroot, bachelor’s buttons, or simply milkwort. This annual or biennial comes and goes in sunny, open areas at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area on the south side of Oslo Road in white, sugary sand that holds some moisture. Drummheads of yellow flowers sally forth from a basal rosette of alternate leaves. Flowering occurs from spring through late winter. Take care not to trample this low-growing wildflower.
