A gallery of images as a follow-up to yesterday’s post about the Paper Wasps nesting at Audubon House. First, a close-up of one of the wasps working on the nest.
The architecture of the open cells of the nest each with their single egg is clearly visible in this shot. The eggs hatch after only two to three days and if you look closely at the wasps at lower left and right, they are regurgitating thoroughly chewed insects into the cells for the young to feed on when they hatch out.
As the young mature they are given actual pieces of insects to chew up on their own.
A second Paper Wasp nest is under construction nearby.
