The Jamaica caper (Capparis jamaicensis) at Audubon House is fruiting. When open, the brown pods are quite spectacular, revealing red seeds and an orange-red lining.
Plants in the pea family, Fabacaeae have seed pods that dehisce — split — longitudinally. Note how the brown pod pictured above is just beginning to split length-wise.
Jamaica caper is most showy when adorned by opening seeds pods.
