Advanced Master Naturalist Eva Irene-Ries led a wonderful walk on mother’s day at the Indrio Savannahs Preserve for John Beidler, Bob Bruce, Pam Deganello, Donna Halleran, Ken Gonyo, Cindy Hersh, John Kennedy, Bob Montanaro, Diane Morgan, and Janice Broda. The coolish weather could not have been better, as Eva artfully guided us along the wide trails in this 297-acre property purchased for preservation by St. Lucie County with abundant freshwater wetlands dotted with scrub and scrubby pine flatbeds. She pointed out many birds including great blue heron, osprey, roseate spoonbill, and sandhill cranes.
In flower in the wetlands were buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) pictured above and fragrant water lily (Nymphaea odorata) below …
The vistas were quite scenic and full of a mix of native plants with few invasive exotic pest plants …
