Iguana iguana Invaders

This large adult green iguana (Iguana iguana) was sunning on the seawall at Vizcaya in Miami. Iguanas are well-established exotic invaders in south Florida and do occur in Indian River County, though, fortunately, not at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area.

Due to their proliferation, EDIS – the Electronic Data Information Source of UF/IFAS Extension – offers a publication entitled Dealing with Iguanas in the South Florida Landscape. Iguana meat, it shares, is considered a delicacy in the animal’s natural range in Central and South America that is often consumed in Easter holiday celebrations. Its final line counsels, “However, make arrangements with the market manager before showing up with a sack of iguanas”.
